True Crime On Screen

Picture from Castbox Blog

I love to watch biographical movies and shows and lately I have found an interest in true crime. In this blog post, I am sharing some of the true crime movies, documentaries and shows I have seen recently.

The Tinder Swindler

This documentary features three women talking about their relationships with a man who posed as a jet-setting diamond mogul on the dating app Tinder and their plans for revenge. It is two hours long but interesting and informative. Watch it on Netflix.

Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey
Lisa McVey, a teenager in Florida was kidnapped by a notorious serial killer in 1984. She narrowly escaped and when she returned home and told her family what happened, they thought she was making it all up. Nobody believes her except a veteran detective. Throughout her ordeal, Lisa used reverse psychology and showed incredible courage and strength. Lisa McVey is now a police officer and motivational speaker. Watch it on Netflix.

Execution Island
Execution Island is a short film about the last night of Bali 9 member Myuran Sukumaran, who was rehabilitated and became an accomplished painter. Melbourne Pastor and Myuran's spiritual advisor Christie Buckingham gives an eye-witness account of what happened during his final moments in Kerobokan prison, when he was being led out and killed by a firing squad at 12.35am on 29th April 2015. This film is only 12 minutes long but emotional and powerful.
Watch it on ACCTV.

Guilty
Another movie about Myuran Sukumaran. This one recreates the final 72-hours of his life, during which Myuran created his last paintings, sketched a guard who was interested in his art and called someone to ask them to make sure his paintings were taken out of the prison so they wouldn't be destroyed. The heart-wrenching film also shows the execution site being set up, the laying out of bullets, and an X being drawn above the prisoners hearts and them singing Amazing Grace before being executed.
It is available on AppleTV, Google Play or Microsoft Store.

Cleveland Abduction
This is the story of three women - Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, who were kidnapped and held by Ariel Castro in Cleveland Ohio for ten years. It is scary and hard to watch at times but the cast did a great job.

The Act
The act is a television series based on the lives of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee had a condition called Munchhausen by proxy, which caused her to fabricate health problems in her daughter. Gypsy was abused by Dee Dee all her life and finally she and her boyfriend killed Dee Dee. Patricia Arquette plays Dee Dee and Joey King plays Gypsy Rose. They both did an amazing job! I have watched the series and some clips of the real Gypsy Rose and Joey was spot on with her portrayal, especially the voice! It is dark, and creepy and not easy to watch but I think it is one of the best true crime dramas. You can watch the eight-episode series on Hulu and Binge.

Welcome back Justice Crew!

Photo credit to @Justicecrewofficial Instagram Justice Crew are a dance and music group who won Australia's Got Talent in 2010 and went on to release many amazing songs including number one hits Boom Boom and Que Sera . After their tour in 2019, they took a long break and now they are back!  I have been a huge fan of them since the beginning and have been to a lot of their shows, so when they announced they were performing a show in February, of course I was excited and attended with my friend. There was a huge crowd there to see them, which surprised a few people, including maybe the guys themselves. After six years, they probably felt rusty, but they were actually amazing as always. It was so cool to see them on stage again and here all the hit songs the number ones and  Everybody. It's so crazy how even now, after six year...

Light in the Darkness

We all carry a little darkness. Moments we don’t speak of. Storms We face. Shadows we walk through quietly.   But that doesn’t mean our light is gone.   Even on heavy days, when it feels like someone has punched us in the chest, or everything feels hopeless. We work. We care. We laugh. We create. We shine, like the brightest star in the sky.   No matter what happens today – even if it’s messy, or lonely, or full of tears - The sun will rise in the morning. Like it always does. Like we always do.   Because light doesn’t have to shout. Sometimes it just keeps showing up, quietly. One bright beam at a time.

Virtual Stop #1: Lymington - A Seaside Gem Discovered by Chance

Welcome to my virtual travel series, where I explore beautiful corners of the world without leaving my bed. Inspired by TikTok livestreamers and walking tour videos, these posts capture what I see, feel and learn as I journey through new places from afar.  I wasn't planning to visit Lymington - not virtually, not in any way. I had never heard of it before watching my favorite singing buskers livestream from the quaint little town in the UK and now I'm captivated. The charm of Lymington unfolded before my eyes: Cobbled pathways, rows of boats bobbing gently at the marina and friendly locals to stop and enjoy the music. I experienced it from my bed.  There is something so welcoming about the town, The people passing by weren't just polite - they were supportive. Some clapped, others left kind words or a few coins, and a few even stayed for songs. There are three ladies who go often to support the guys. They have all been following them on TikTok for a while and met each other...
