February Reads

It's February and I have already finished reading six books! Today, I am going to tell you a little bit about each one of these great books which you could possibly add to your own reading lists.  Get Even by Gretchen McNeil Get Even is about a secret group of girls called Don't Get Mad who take revenge on the bullies at their elite private school. One of their targets is killed and is found with a DGM card in his hands so the girls realize they are not as anonymous as they thought they were and someone wants revenge on them. Pick up this book if you like mysteries. Staying Strong by Lauren Yeates It is very important to look after our mental health, especially during hard times like going through the pandemic. Staying Strong: Finding Inner Peace During Hard Times provides a lot of tips for taking care of ourselves, such as writing a to-do list and putting time into self care. It also includes a 30-day happiness challenge, which I will be doing soon. This is a book I think every...

Image
Hello!!! I hope all of you are having a great weekend so far and for anyone living in a place where it's winter, I hope you are staying warm.  I have been doing the Dymocks book shop reading challenge, which they started to help book lovers achieve their reading goals. There are 26 categories of books listed which is a lot but we can read a book which fulfills more than one category.and there's no deadline for the challenge which is great, especially for people who don't have much time to sit down and read.  In this post, I am going to share the books I have read so far.  Category - A book by a celebrity, A book based on truth and a book with more than 400 pages. A Promised Land by Barack Obama This is a memoir by the 44th president of the United States of America. He tells the story of his life, starting from his childhood and going all the way to his first few years as president. He goes into a lot of detail and I feel like it is a heavy read, with 712 pages divided int...

Books and Reading

Image
Hello everyone! Happy first day o the month! I can't believe it's June already. This year is going fast, isn't it? As an avid reader, I want to share my love of books and reading with people and try to encourage others to read so I am going to post more book content on this blog. I already do have some but I want to write more in-depth posts, like reviews and other topics related to books.  I'm sure there are others out there who love reading as much as I do and, even if you're not really into it, I hope you will enjoy reading these posts and that  they will somehow motivate you to check out at least one book.  Wherever you are in the word right now, I hope you are doing well.

Book Review: Crossroads

Image
People around the world were devastated to hear of the bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team in Canada on April 6, 2018. It was a day that changed the lives of 29 families forever and one of the survivors, Kaleb Dahlgren, has written a book called Crossroads where he tells the story of his life from childhood right up to the summer of 2019. He talks about the crash and everything he has experienced and done since then but as you read through it, you will see that Kaleb is more than a Humboldt Broncos crash survivor and learn valuable lessons.  Here I'm going to share my thoughts on the book, starting with the cover. Just look at it. It's beautiful and gives me chills!  I love that the title of the book is called Crossroads and Kaleb is pictured standing at a crossroad. The photo is amazing right?! You may think that it's photoshopped but no, it is a real photo. In an interview on Humboldt radio station 107.5 Bolt FM, Kaleb said that the Nipawin RCMP helped t...

How to get people to read

Image
Hello! I have always loved books and I think reading is the easiest way to learn and discover new worlds, especially for children. Everyone is always on their phones and computers and looking at a screen all the time is not good. I think it's sad when people say they dislike reading, they're missing out on something that could bring so much happiness into our lives. In this post, I am sharing a few ways you can encourage reading habits and teach children to read at home. These tips are for all ages.  Image from wired.com !. Read to your children before they are born. This probably sounds strange, but letting our baby hear your voice is special.  2. Gift books. For birthdays, Christmases and other celebrations, give family and friends books as a gift. The book could be about something they enjoy, are interested in and teaches them life lessons.  3.Take trips to the library. Go to your local library and choose books to take home and read for the week. If you don't want to ...

Book Review: Herbie's Colorful World

Image
Two years after the release of Donte Jackson's first children's book, Herbie Vore the Dinosaur,  he is back with the second book of the series, Herbie's Colorful World.  Children everywhere fell in love with Herbie. the adorable little dinosaur and I am sure they are all happy to see him again!  I am going to share my thoughts on the book in this post.  Just as the title suggests, Herbie learns all about colors. The cover is beautiful and I love that the world colorful is written in different colors and the letter O in World is replaced with a globe. It adds to the attractiveness. There is a dedication to young artists around the world on the first page which is such a sweet touch.  The story opens with Herbie waking up and excitedly telling readers that he dreamed about colors. It's good that all the pictures match the words. I think that helps children imagine the story in their minds and having only one line on each page makes it easy for those learning to rea...

Review: Carnie Vore

Image
Last year children's Author Athena Phillips wrote and published her first book, Herbie's Happy Birthday  which is amazing and now she is back with a second book called Carnie Vore Helps With Chores.  In this book, we are introduced to Herbie's cousin Carnie, an adorable little dinosaur who enjoys helping out around the house. Athena "wrote this book to encourage children to be more of a helper in the world." It definitely does that. I'm going to share my thoughts on it. The cover of the book is absolutely beautiful. It's bright and colourful and I love the purple theme of the room. Purple is my favourite colour so of course I do! The title is written in big font and block letters which makes it easy for children to read. It is a very attractive cover that I think people will be drawn to when they are looking in a library or bookshop. The story follows a day in the life of Carnie. We get to see what she does each day, from waking up, playing,...

Why I Like Biographies

Image
Hello, I love to read. I have a large collection of books and have read a lot of them two or three times. My favourite books to read are biographies. Here I will tell you why. Everyday I am surrounded by people who inspire me - family, friends, co-workers and people I meet. I have a big interest in people's life stories and draw inspiration from them. That is why I love to read biographies. I like to read about how celebrities and people who are in the public eye came to be where they are today. Reading about what their childhood was like, how they grew up and things they have done and experienced interests me. I especially love reading about people who have had tough lives and been through many obstacles but have come out on top and are now very successful in their careers and are leading happy lives. Those stories really inspire and motivate me to work hard to achieve what I want to and never give up. Below is a list of my favourite autobiographies and biographies. Mayb...
