The world premiere of the Michael biopic was held in Berlin, Germany on Friday. Thousands of Michael Jackson fans attended, dressed in outfits inspired by the legendary King of Pop's famous looks.
Jaafar Jackson, who plays his uncle Michael in the movie, walked along the red carpet with his co-stars Colman Domingo, Nia Long and Juliano Valdi, and some of his family members including his father Jermaine, uncles Jackie and Marlon, Brothers Jermajesty and Randy Jackson Jr., cousins Prince and Bigi Jackson, and Fiancée Maddie Simpson.
They all posed for photos and gave interviews to the media along the red carpet. Jaafar said he watched YouTube videos, archived footage and drew on his own memories to prepare for the role.
"One of my favourites is when I first saw him on stage performing in New York for the first time which was the best experience for me," he told Reuters.
Jackie Jackson, who was a part of the Jackson Five and also pursued his own solo music career got emotional as he spoke of his nephew's portrayal in the movie. He said it was so convincing that he would at times forget that he was actually watching Jaafar.
"He became Michael in the film," he said, through tears.
Michael, the biographical drama film, tells the story of Michael Jackson's life from his early days performing in the Jackson Five to his solo career. It shows Michael at his peak, rather than focusing on the controversial aspects of his life.
Filming started in January 2024, produced by Lionsgate Films and directed by Antoine Fuqua. It was first scheduled to be in theatres in April 2025, but reshoots delayed it and it was eventually confirmed to be released in April 2026.
Tickets are on sale now at major Australian cinemas including Event Cinemas, Hoyts, and Village Cinemas.
