Sixteen Sticks

One day while scrolling through Twitter, I saw a few people tweeting about a song called "Sixteen Sticks" by Greg Rider. I had never heard of him before and was curious so after listening to the song on YouTube, I searched him up on the internet. In this post, I am sharing a few facts about him and the beautiful song.
 


  • Greg Rider is from Toronto, Canada.
  • Greg started pursuing music in his 20's.
  • He started by busking on street corners and performing in bars.
  • While working as a bartender in the Cayman Islands, he spent his time off writing and performing at open mic opportunities. 
  • He moved to Nashville and has since worked hard on music and grown as an artist and songwriter.
  • He has performed on WSM, a famous country music radio station, and at Whiskey Jam, a renowned venue in Nashville. 
  • Greg is influenced by Sam Hunt, Jordan Davis and Tim McGraw. 
  • Last year, he joined a record label called Father & Son Records.

On April 6th, 2018, a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team crashed, sadly killing 16 people and seriously injuring 13 others. As the hockey community and Canada grieved, there was an outpouring of support and love from people all over the world. Ice hockey is only a moderately popular support here in Australia but there are players, fans and people here who were saddened by the news, put their sticks outside the door, made donations and did what they could to help those who were affected. 

Greg Rider wrote the song, Sixteen Sticks, for the families and friends of the young people lost in the accident. It is truly an amazing song and a beautiful tribute to the Humboldt Broncos. You can tell that he put his heart and soul into this. It is well written, the accompanying music is just perfect and his voice is amazing and powerful. Greg first posted a short clip of the song on Instagram last December. He said he was nervous because some people accused him of writing it for the wrong reasons but he followed his heart and posted it with the blessing of Tyler Smith, one of the survivors of the bus crash. Since officially being released to the world, the song has been viewed thousands of times and received so many positive comments. Fans are now asking for it to be played on the radio and have been playing it on repeat. Greg posted an acoustic version of Sixteen Sticks and in the caption he wrote, "I hope this song helps anyone who lost someone that day and will remind you that those boys will always be watching and they will never be forgotten." I'm sure it will.
This is sure to tug at the heart strings and, hockey fan or not, I believe everyone will love it. 

Thank you Greg for ignoring the haters, following your heart and releasing a song which means so much to a lot of people. You are a talented and great person who is spreading a positive influence around the world. Congratulations on this release and all your other songs.

Virtual Stop #1: Lymington - A Seaside Gem Discovered by Chance

The charm of Lymington unfolded before my eyes: Cobbled pathways, rows of boats bobbing gently at the marina and friendly locals to stop and enjoy the music. I experienced it from my bed.  There is something so welcoming about the town, The people passing by weren't just polite - they were supportive.
