Interview: Grace, Physie

Hello!

In this post, I will share with you my interview with Grace, a young BJP Physie dancer.

Could you tell is what BJP Physie is?
Physie is a form of dance and exercise to music. It combines elements of aerobics, jazz, ballet, contemporary and hip hop. It is a unique Australian sport that is affordable, community based and lots of fun. You can start from the age of 3 all the way into your old age. Last year, BJP Physie celebrated 125 years of the sport.

When did you start participating in Physie?
I started physie when I was 3, I'm 14 now so this will be my 11th year.

What inspired you to start doing it?
It first started as just exercise for me as a little girl but I've become more focused as I've gotten into the older age groups.

Do you do it at school or a club?
It's mainly clubs all over Australia. My club is Brindabella in North Canberra. We are all one big family and we support each other, not just in physie, but in other things as well. All  the girls are like sisters to me and the teachers are like second mums.

How often do you and your team practise?
At the beginning of the year it's usually one class per week to learn the routines and as the competition season gets closer, some clubs do two classes per week, one for team competitions and one for individual competitions.

What do you do in your practise sessions?
In our classes we learn five routines based on the age category you are in and it gets more technical once you get into the seniors and also more competitive.

How often do you compete?
There are usually two lines of competitions. There's individual and teams, then there is interclubs which are just warm up competitions before the big competitions like zone, repecharge and nationals and clubs usually host them.

Do you travel around Australia for competitions or are they just in your home state?
Last year, my club Brindabella held our own interclub so I didn't have to travel far for it. I'm usually doing trips up the coast and to Sydney for competitions but I'm pretty used to it as I have been doing it for a while.

What are the age-categories in the competitions?
5-year-olds can start competing but they don't have to. 5-14's are juniors, 15-25'sare seniors and then there are ladies.

What do you wear to practice and competitions?
At practices you are permitted to wear tight fitting dance clothes and at competitions you wear a leotard of your own colour and style and teams have to wear a black long sleeve leotard. Nude fishnet stockings are optional.

How do you stay fit and healthy for physie?
During completion seasons, I make sure I get plenty of sleep because I'll be having very long days and backstage at competitions there are lovely ladies called associates who wear special outfits and help marshal heats and help you out with things.

What are the benefits of participating in physie?
You meet life-long friends whilst getting fit and having fun.You meet people who love what you love and it makes you feel so happy.

What do you love most about it?
The thing I love about physie is that I meet new people and create new friendships and besides that, the rush of competing gives me a buzz and I'm the most happiest when I'm at training or competitions, even though I'm always nervous. I've always loved to dance and reach my dreams and physie has really helped me become who I am, not just as a dancer, but as a human. I've met some of my best friends through this sport. Even if they have quit or are still doing it I'm still friends with them all which is great.

If anyone reading this wants to get into physie, how can they do that?
\If you would like to get involved with physie just look up BJP Physie and find a club near you. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I do!

Welcome back Justice Crew!

Photo credit to @Justicecrewofficial Instagram Justice Crew are a dance and music group who won Australia's Got Talent in 2010 and went on to release many amazing songs including number one hits Boom Boom and Que Sera . After their tour in 2019, they took a long break and now they are back!  I have been a huge fan of them since the beginning and have been to a lot of their shows, so when they announced they were performing a show in February, of course I was excited and attended with my friend. There was a huge crowd there to see them, which surprised a few people, including maybe the guys themselves. After six years, they probably felt rusty, but they were actually amazing as always. It was so cool to see them on stage again and here all the hit songs the number ones and  Everybody. It's so crazy how even now, after six year...

Light in the Darkness

We all carry a little darkness. Moments we don’t speak of. Storms We face. Shadows we walk through quietly.   But that doesn’t mean our light is gone.   Even on heavy days, when it feels like someone has punched us in the chest, or everything feels hopeless. We work. We care. We laugh. We create. We shine, like the brightest star in the sky.   No matter what happens today – even if it’s messy, or lonely, or full of tears - The sun will rise in the morning. Like it always does. Like we always do.   Because light doesn’t have to shout. Sometimes it just keeps showing up, quietly. One bright beam at a time.

Virtual Stop #1: Lymington - A Seaside Gem Discovered by Chance

Welcome to my virtual travel series, where I explore beautiful corners of the world without leaving my bed. Inspired by TikTok livestreamers and walking tour videos, these posts capture what I see, feel and learn as I journey through new places from afar.  I wasn't planning to visit Lymington - not virtually, not in any way. I had never heard of it before watching my favorite singing buskers livestream from the quaint little town in the UK and now I'm captivated. The charm of Lymington unfolded before my eyes: Cobbled pathways, rows of boats bobbing gently at the marina and friendly locals to stop and enjoy the music. I experienced it from my bed.  There is something so welcoming about the town, The people passing by weren't just polite - they were supportive. Some clapped, others left kind words or a few coins, and a few even stayed for songs. There are three ladies who go often to support the guys. They have all been following them on TikTok for a while and met each other...
