What I have learnt about Canada

In October 2017, I travelled to America and Canada for a holiday. I have been looking through all the photos I took and remembering the fun we had. I wrote about "things I learnt in America" - http://thevrk.blogspot.com/2018/10/things-i-learnt-in-america.html so now, I am sharing what I have learnt about Canada. I learnt these facts before, during and after the trip.

·       The currency is Canadian Dollar (CAD) 💵

·       Canada has ten provinces and three territories. Provinces - Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, New Foundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan. Territories - Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.

·       State – Smaller territory of a country. Province – Unit of a country that is created with an administrative point of view

·       The school year starts in the first week of September and goes till the end of June. It is divided into periods or quarters (terms and semesters)

·         School uniforms are not required by most public schools.

·         Toronto is the capital city of the province of Ontario.

·        Toronto is known for skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. The tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere is the CN Tower.

Toronto is Canada’s largest city, the fifth largest city in North America, and the world’s fourth most liveable city.

·        Niagara Falls is a city at the famous waterfalls of the same name. The Rainbow Bridge, an arch bridge across the Niagara River gorge, connects with New York.

·       Lacrosse is the national summer sport and ice hockey is the national winter sport.

·       Ice hockey is considered to be the most popular sport in Canada and the most successful sport in international competition. 🏒

·       The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America. It has 31 teams, 7 of which are Canadian. They include Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) is an association of ten Junior A ice hockey leagues and teams. Three junior hockey teams (and the only ones I know about) are the Spruce Grove Saints, Whitecourt Wolverines and Humboldt Broncos 💚💛.

·        Other common sports are football, soccer, basketball, curling and baseball. 🏈⚽🏀⚾

·        The Toronto Blue Jays baseball team’s home stadium is the Rogers Centre.

·       Celebrities from Toronto include Drake, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Keanu Reeves, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd.

·      Many television shows and movies are filmed in Canada including Riverdale, Suits and The Next Step. 📺

·     Spring is March to May, Summer is June to August, Fall is September to November and Winter December to February.

·   Tim Hortons is the biggest fast-food chain in Canada. One night, my uncle, who we were staying with in Toronto, took us there. I got a hot chocolatem which was delicious! ☕

·    Soft drinks are called Pop in Canada.

·    Just like in America, some words are spelt differently in Canada. For example, mum is spelt mom there.

·    It is a multicultural country.

·   Canadians are friendly and welcoming people.

On that trip, I only went to to Toronto and whenever we can travel again, I would love to see other parts of Canada

*All the photos in this post, except the flag, are my own.

Virtual Stop #1: Lymington - A Seaside Gem Discovered by Chance

Welcome to my virtual travel series, where I explore beautiful corners of the world without leaving my bed. Inspired by TikTok livestreamers and walking tour videos, these posts capture what I see, feel and learn as I journey through new places from afar.  I wasn't planning to visit Lymington - not virtually, not in any way. I had never heard of it before watching my favorite singing buskers livestream from the quaint little town in the UK and now I'm captivated. The charm of Lymington unfolded before my eyes: Cobbled pathways, rows of boats bobbing gently at the marina and friendly locals to stop and enjoy the music. I experienced it from my bed.  There is something so welcoming about the town, The people passing by weren't just polite - they were supportive. Some clapped, others left kind words or a few coins, and a few even stayed for songs. There are three ladies who go often to support the guys. They have all been following them on TikTok for a while and met each other...

The Prove It Game

The public opinions on Meghan Markle, or Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are divided. Some love her and most seem to hate her. I admire her in some ways. I just watched an interview she did with podcast host Jamie Kern Lima and something she said resonated with me.  Image from Jamie Kern Lima YouTube.  Here it is: "We spend so much of our lives trying to prove something. You have to prove that you're enough, you have to prove that you're pretty enough, you have to prove that you're smart enough, you have to prove that you're a good wife or a good friend, and I am just so done with the prove it game. When you get to the place where you feel like I don't have to prove anything to you anymore. I don't have to prove that I'm a good person, I don't have to prove that I'm a good wife or mum or friend, I don't have to prove that I work hard. It can be really freeing when you stop playing the prove it game." - Meghan Markle. I completely agree with...

Social Media Ban

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that the Australian Government will enact laws to ban children under 16 years of age from social media and here I am sharing my thoughts on this.  Image from The Chapel Hairdressers - Horsham Facebook page  There are many benefits of social media. We can share photos and videos with our families and friends to keep them updated on our lives, instantly communicate with them, have a record of special memories, businesses can promote their products and services, connect with people professionally and do so much more. So many people are working on social media full time as influencers, working with brands and creating content online  and some have even married people they met online.  Social media can also be used as a weapon.   Preteens and teenagers go through puberty, stress about getting good grades at school, do their best to live up to their parents expectations, have many things they are worried about and just wan...
