Book Recommendations

Hello!

Now is the time to read all those books you have sitting on the bookshelf. Reading is a great way to forget about the pandemic for a while, take a break from the news and your busy lives and learn something new.

Here, I am sharing a few books I have enjoyed reading.

Seriously...Im Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres - Ellen gives advice on many things including how to be positive, more social and be kind to other people in her funny way. Some people may find that it drags on but I love its light-hearted nature and humor.

Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella - This book follows the main character, Audrey, as she battles and overcomes her anxiety-disorder with the help of her family and a new friend, who helps her slowly leave her house again. It is also a story of young love.

Bachelor Nation by Amy Kaufman - Readers learn what happens behind-the-scenes of The Bachelor, a very popular reality dating show. Past contestants of the show talk about their experience and how it is edited to make people and situations look a certain way. This book is about the American version but it most probably the same as The Bachelor in Australia and other countries.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman - In the aftermath of a car accident involving her family, Mia Hall, the only surviving member, is in a coma and has an out-of-body experience and watches what is happening around her. She sees her family and friends gather in the hospital. The movie based on this book stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Mia.

Girl Online by Zoe Sugg - Girl Online is the debut book of British internet celebrity Zoe Sugg. It is about a teenage anonymous blogger and her experience with going viral.

Sisters First by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush - The twin daughters of former US president George W Bush tell the story of their lives, growing up in a political family and living in the White House when their grandfather and their father were presidents. I enjoyed reading about Jenna and Barbaras experiences as first daughters and their twin bond. We also learn more details of what happened during the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks.

Moonwalk by Michael Jackson - In this autobiography, Michael Jackson talks about his familys beginnings in Gary, Indiana, starting music and performing and travelling with his brothers, the Jackson 5. He addresses some of the rumours that appeared in the media and his experience with fans. There are so many books, movies, documentaries and news stories about him but it is interesting to hear about his experiences through his own words and I love that he wrote his signature on one of the first pages so everyone who buys the book can feel like they have his autograph.

L.A. Candy and Sweet Little Lies by Lauren Conrad - In L.A. Candy, best friends Jane and Scarlett move to Los Angeles and after being discovered by a TV producer in a club, star in a reality show which follows them around as they go about their daily lives. The girls quickly learn that being on TV is not as good as it seems to be and it is not all about fame, designer clothes and products, invites to events and access to clubs.Sweet Little Lies continues on from that and there are two oter books in the series.

Becoming Michelle Obama - This is the story of Michelle Obamas life, from being born and raised in Chicago, studying in college, working and meeting Barack Obama, having her two daughters Malia and Sasha, being on the campaign trail to becoming the first lady of the United States. There is now a documentary based on the book on Netflix, called Becoming.

The Girls by Abigail Pesta - In 2018, former USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually assaulting hundreds of gymnasts when they were minors. in this book Abigal Pesta talks to some of those women and former gymnasts who bravely spoke out about the abuse and brought him down.

Carnie Vore Helps With Chores by Athena Phillips - A childrens book which  is a great way for parents, grandparents and teachers to inspire their kids to clean up and help out around the house. It is a nice story with cute characters and colourful pictures.

Virtual Stop #1: Lymington - A Seaside Gem Discovered by Chance

Welcome to my virtual travel series, where I explore beautiful corners of the world without leaving my bed. Inspired by TikTok livestreamers and walking tour videos, these posts capture what I see, feel and learn as I journey through new places from afar.  I wasn't planning to visit Lymington - not virtually, not in any way. I had never heard of it before watching my favorite singing buskers livestream from the quaint little town in the UK and now I'm captivated. The charm of Lymington unfolded before my eyes: Cobbled pathways, rows of boats bobbing gently at the marina and friendly locals to stop and enjoy the music. I experienced it from my bed.  There is something so welcoming about the town, The people passing by weren't just polite - they were supportive. Some clapped, others left kind words or a few coins, and a few even stayed for songs. There are three ladies who go often to support the guys. They have all been following them on TikTok for a while and met each other...

The Prove It Game

The public opinions on Meghan Markle, or Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are divided. Some love her and most seem to hate her. I admire her in some ways. I just watched an interview she did with podcast host Jamie Kern Lima and something she said resonated with me.  Image from Jamie Kern Lima YouTube.  Here it is: "We spend so much of our lives trying to prove something. You have to prove that you're enough, you have to prove that you're pretty enough, you have to prove that you're smart enough, you have to prove that you're a good wife or a good friend, and I am just so done with the prove it game. When you get to the place where you feel like I don't have to prove anything to you anymore. I don't have to prove that I'm a good person, I don't have to prove that I'm a good wife or mum or friend, I don't have to prove that I work hard. It can be really freeing when you stop playing the prove it game." - Meghan Markle. I completely agree with...

Social Media Ban

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that the Australian Government will enact laws to ban children under 16 years of age from social media and here I am sharing my thoughts on this.  Image from The Chapel Hairdressers - Horsham Facebook page  There are many benefits of social media. We can share photos and videos with our families and friends to keep them updated on our lives, instantly communicate with them, have a record of special memories, businesses can promote their products and services, connect with people professionally and do so much more. So many people are working on social media full time as influencers, working with brands and creating content online  and some have even married people they met online.  Social media can also be used as a weapon.   Preteens and teenagers go through puberty, stress about getting good grades at school, do their best to live up to their parents expectations, have many things they are worried about and just wan...
