Hello!
Are you thinking of getting a pet? If the answer is yes, please consider adopting from an animal shelter instead of buying one from a pet store or breeder. In this post I am going to share some reasons why adoption is better, but first, let me tell you some benefits of having a pet!
Pets provide companionship - For people who live alone, having a pet is like having a roommate and something to keep them company. Even if you don't live alone, pets bring so much happiness into the house and could help the whole family spend more time together. You all can watch your pet, play games, share cuddles and laugh at its antics. Cats and dogs are very affectionate. Imagine coming home after a hard day at work or school and seeing your pet running to the door to greet you? How good would that be!
They make you feel safe - Parents could go out and leave their children at home knowing the dog is there with them. It's good to have a guard dog for this purpose. Some dogs in particular are protective of their owners so you don't have to worry. Also if your parents and everyone you live with moves away or goes on a holiday, you still have a companion at home.
Pets help people socialize - If you have a family member or roommate who tends to keep to themselves, your pet could bring them out of their room and make them want to spend more time with you. You can all bond over the pet and make lovely memories. When you take your dog out for a walk, you will see other people and their dogs. Pets are great conversation starters and you could make friends. Remember the scene in the movie 101 Dalmatians where Roger is in the park walking with Pongo and they meet Anita and Perdita? Pets can help bring shy people out of their shells and make them more confident.
They relieve stress and reduce anxiety and depression: Playing and cuddling with pets calms you down when you feel anxious, cheer you up when you are sad and give you a break from your busy day. Pets, and dogs in particular, are very loyal and will always be there for you, no matter what. They are good at providing emotional support.
Pets teach responsibility - Having a pet is a huge responsibility, just like having children. You have to make sure your pet is fed, exercised, cleaned and taken care of and if you have young children, getting them to help take care of it will help them become responsible and trust-worthy people.
Exercise - Pets make you more physically active. Daily walks to the park and exercise is good for both you and your pet.
They make you feel wanted and loved - Pets will greet you when you come home everyday, follow you around the house and garden and give you affection. They are loyal, never judge and love you unconditionally.
Okay, so why should you adopt a pet?
Adopting a pet from a shelter is much cheaper than buying one from a store. If you buy a pet, you will have to spend thousands of dollars but if you adopt one, the fee is much cheaper. The adoption fee covers micro-chipping, desexing and health checks. Some shelters and rescue organizations can help with pet insurance. Some of your money will also go towards the care of other animals so you're taking one animal home with you but helping the staff bring in and look after others.
By adopting a pet, you will be giving it a second chance at life. Many of the animals who are in the shelters, are there through no fault of their own. It could be because their original owners had to move or could no longer take care of them due to poor health or financial difficulties. No matter what the reason is, all those animals deserve to have a loving family and home.
You will also help eradicate puppy farms and places that abuse animals and, although some of the animals have had traumatic pasts, it doesn't mean they will definitely have behavioral issues. In fact, most of them are perfectly happy and just want to find a forever home and be loved.
Staff at the shelters train the animals and are already house-trained so if and when you bring a new pet home, you won't have to worry about it messing up your house or taking it to pet training schools. Even if you do have to keep training it, you can get help and you may not need to spend too much time on that.
One misconception about animal shelters are that they only have staffies available for adoption and that breed is dangerous. To be honest, I look at Animal shelter websites often and mostly see staffies but shelters actually have a wide range of breeds. They share some on their websites but if you actually go into one, you can see all the pets they have and staffies are known for their gentle temperament and being sweet.
Not all rescue dogs are old or have health issues. You can get puppies and kittens too. Most people want kittens or puppies because they want to watch their pet grow up, train them from an early age and have them for a long time which is understandable but by adopting an older pet, you can give them a place to live and love and happiness for their remaining days. Many of the animals are perfectly fit and healthy.
Consider adopting a pet with special needs. Of course, when you are thinking about getting a pet, you have to think about what type would best fit in with your lifestyle but if you have enough time and patience, please try to give a pet which is deaf, blind or has a missing limb. Take time to meet and spend time with the scared and shy ones and the ones with boring colours or don't stick out to you. Regardless of their appearance and personalities, all animals deserve to be loved and taken care of, just like humans.
You could get a breed you never expected. You may have an idea of what breed of cat or dog you want but there are so many in the shelters that you may not know about. When you have time, go into the RSPCA or another shelter, walk around and have a look and talk to the staff. They are experts and and can give you suggestions and great advice. A breed you least expected may end up being the best match.
Adopting makes you feel good, improves your health and boosts your self-esteem.
