Just over a year after the release of Hopelessly, Jakob Delgado is back with his second song as a solo artist! The former boy band member started promoting Drowning at the end of last month by posting short lyric videos on Instagram and released the song yesterday. The fans have waited a very long time to hear new music from Jakob and it was worth it.
I'm going to share my thoughts on the song.
I think Drowning is about a broken relationship. With the words, "Feel like I can sum it up, you've been f***ing with someone..." it sounds like he is talking about someone who cheated on him or did him wrong. It's very easy to assume it's about a girl but really it could be about anyone. Maybe it's about a friend. Whoever the person is doesn't seem to want anything to do with him unless they want something as the lyrics, "you don't call me unless you need a favour," suggest.
Jakob said in an Instagram livestream that he will write a letter to everyone explaining what the song means but he said that he was inspired to write it by the way he was feeling at the time so maybe it's based on his personal experience? We will have to wait for this letter.
I love the sound of the song. I'm not sure what genre or type it is. To me, it sounds like a pop song and it is too fast to be a ballad. I like that there is no auto-tune because his voice doesn't need it at all, it is perfect the way it is. It's definitely a catchy tune. As I sit here writing this, I am listening to drowning and swaying in my seat. Something about Jakob's voice is soothing to me. He performs so passionately on stage and I can imagine what he is like recording in the studio. When I first saw the title and cover art, I thought it was going to be a real tearjerker but it hasn't made me cry, maybe it has made other people cry? It is a sad song though, because it's talking about a bad relationship.
If Drowning is based on his personal experience, I feel bad because he is such a nice guy, he doesn't deserve to be treated badly. I can tell that his voice has developed and improved greatly in the past year.
All of Jakob's songs, the two releases and the ones he has played on livestreams are relatable. He writes and sings about things that happen to so many people everyday. I remember meeting Jakob as a little 14-year-old boy and now he is an adult so of course he is singing about mature subjects like in Drowning. I personally prefer songs without swearing so one thing I don't like the use of the "F" word here but other than that I have nothing negative to say about the song.
To Jakob, manager David and everyone else involved, congratulations! You have done an amazing job and we are all now looking forward to more of your music and maybe seeing a music video soon!
Drowning is available now on Spotify, Google Play and other platforms.
