Hello beautiful people!
This post is about one of my favorite magazines, Dolly.
Dolly is a bi-monthly magazine for girls aged 14-17 which was launched in 1970. Each issue is filled with celebrity news and interviews, fashion, health and beauty tips. The magazine was recently re-launched with all the same features but also a new and, in my opinion, more mature look. It now includes longer articles on celebrities, lifestyle and relationships.
It covers a variety of issues affecting young girls such as puberty, education and relationships includes topics that these girls many not be aware of. For example, the current issue features an article on nude selfies and how to protect ourselves on page 30[ which, to be honest, is a topic I didn't know about. After reading the article, I did some research to find out more about it and was shocked to see just how big of an issue it is and how often it happens.
I like that it includes real-life stories which tell us about experiences people have had and how they overcame issues like their selfies appearing on porn websites. These stories can help other girls going through similar situations.
Each article is compelling, meaning it evokes interest and attention in a powerful way and the lay out of each page is colourful and attractive. I like that the articles are written in columns instead of long paragraphs so they are not heavy to read.
Along with the magazine, I also love Dolly's Instagram and YouTube channel. With all the fun pictures they post on Instagram, it's not surprising that they have 50.9k followers.Their daily posts include updates on what's happening in their offices and what readers can look forward to in their next issue, funny and relatable memes such as the one below and photos good-looking guys. Come on ladies, admit it, you love those photos!
Dolly's YouTube channel (Dolly Video) is equally as fun. It features celebrity interviews and performances, how-to videos and takes us behind the scenes of photoshoots.
Dolly gives girls amazing opportunities through events and competitions. The Dolly model search gives young girls hoping to get into the modelling/fashion industry the chance to meet experts, be a part of photoshoots and experience what it's like to actually work as a model. The winner gets to travel, make contacts and take thee first steps to achieve their dreams. A competition was just held to give a fan of 2015 X Factor finalists In Stereo the opportunity to star in the group's next music video. A lot of kids dream of being in a music video and they may not get those opportunities anywhere else. I want to congratulate Alyssa Samuels from Sydney on winning the competition. I hope she enjoys the experience and has fun.
Speaking of In Stereo, Dolly held "The Main Event" where the boys went around to various shopping centres around Australia to perform and sign copies of their EP, 'The Speed of Sound.' I went along to their performance at Westfield Burwood. It was a lot of fun and I know so many fans were thankful to Dolly for organizing this free event because most of them are just kids and can't go to concerts for various reasons. Dolly gave them the opportunity to see their idols perform live, get autographs and take photos with them. Magazines rarely hold these types of events.
They used to have a reader column where people could submit a short paragraph on any subject. I thought I would try my luck and submitted a column titled 'I call Sydney home' and to my surprise it was featured in the December 2015 issue! I didn't know until a friend told me she had read it. As soon as she texted me about it, I ran out to my local newsagency to buy a copy and excitedly showed it to my family and friends. The front cover and my column are now up on my bedroom wall.
Although Dolly magazine's target audience is 14-17 year olds, I still buy and read it now as an adult. I get something useful out of every issue. For example, from the current issue I've found a new favourite snack (Banana bagels, pg.106), tips on how to organize my desk (pg.46) and fashion inspiration (pg.77) I have been reading Dolly since I was fourteen and it is still one of my favourite magazines. I will continue to read it.
All the writers, photographers and employees at Dolly are experts in their fields and professional in everything they do. I can tell that they all work so hard to make the magazine successful. The Dolly team are inspiring me to keep writing and work hard so that I can achieve my dream of writing for a magazine and have a successful career.
Congratulations to the editor, Josie Rozenberg-Clarke and the entire team on creating a wonderful magazine and helping us become confident young women. Hopefully this magazine will be around for many more years to come!
